Joan Bates Korich passed away on December 9, 2025 in Fair Oaks, CA. She was born March 28, 1937 in San Francisco, CA to Sherman & Afton Bryant and grew up in Oakland, CA. She had one younger sister, Carole, and two younger half-brothers, Sherman and Walter. She married David W Bates on March 29, 1957 in Salt Lake City, UT. They had 3 children, Randy, Steven, & Annette. She and her family moved to Sacramento, CA in 1961. She and David later divorced.

As a single mother of 3, she worked days as a secretary for Drs. Gibson and Dick (chiropractors), and nights at Rhodes Department store. She later worked in the secretarial pool for the State of CA where she worked with State Senator John Nejedly, then State Senator Ed Royce of Orange County. She married Kim C Korich on September 9, 1990 in Roseville, CA. In 1992, when Ed Royce was elected to the US Congress, she and Kim moved to Washington DC where she worked as Congressman Royce’s Chief of Staff until her retirement in 2002. She and Kim then moved back to Sacramento.

She had many hobbies & interests: She was an expert seamstress, sewing clothes for herself, family members, and others. After retirement, she took up quilting and made numerous beautiful quilts for family members. She was an avid golfer, playing in and winning many tournaments. She was named 2009 Super Senior Champion at Mather Golf Course. She enjoyed traveling and visited many places around the world, including attending the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. She loved music, baking, the outdoors, her many friends, and especially her family.

Survived By

She is survived by her husband Kim Korich, sister Carole Applegate, brothers Sherman and Walter Bryant, children Randy Bates (Laurie), Steven Bates (Lesli), and Annette Bates Levy (Joe). Eight grandchildren: Daniel, Paul, Matthew, Melanie, Ryan, Whitney, Eric, and Amelia, and 17 great-grandchildren.
